THE
ProTaper ADVANTAGE: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF
ENDODONTICS
The
purpose of the "RUDDLE ON ROTARY"
series of articles is to provide useful
information that will enable dentists to
pedictably shape root canals for three-dimensional
obturation. The information in the
se
articles is intended to help clinical performance
for all clinicians who perform root canal
preparation procedures regardless o the
specific instruments chosen and the techniques
employed.
The
first article in the "RUDDLE ON ROTARY"
series focused on the factors influencing
NiTi rotary success and listed the specific
advantages and disadvantages of the most
commonly used systems1.
The second, peer reviewed article in the
series emphasized the guidelines for successful
access, the strategies and preparation sequence
for shaping root canals, and reviewed theimportance
of irrigants and their role in cleaning
the root canal system2.
This article will introuce the new Progressively
Tapered (ProTaper) NiTi rotary files (Dentsply),
describe their unique geometries, features
and benfits, and emphasize their guidelines
for use.
Clifford
J. Ruddle, DDS, FACD, FICD
 Brief
Biographical Data
Dr. Clifford J. Ruddle is the founder
and director of Advanced Endodontics ,
an international educational source, in
Santa Barbara, California. He received his
dental degree from university of the Pacific,
School of Dentistry, San Francisco, California,
and completed his postgraduate work in endodontics
at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston,
Massachusetts. Dr. Ruddle is a fellow in
both the American and International Colleges
of Dentistry, is an Assistant Professor
of Graduate Endodontics at Loma Linda University
and University of California, Los Angeles,
and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of
Endodontics at University of the Pacific,
School of Dentistry. Dr Ruddle is the author
of two (2) chapters in the 8th Edition of
Pathways of the Pulp: "Cleaning
& Shaping the Root Canal System"
and "Nonsurgical Endodontic Retreatment".
He is internationally known for providing
superb endodontic education as a lecturer
and through his clinical articles, training
manuals, and multimedia products. Additionally,
he maintains a private practice in Santa
Barbara, California.
